HENRY CRAVER

Another of the pioneers of this county was laid away to his final resting place, when Henry Craver was buried in Hazelwood Wednesday. The Cravers were among the earliest settlers and the Craver name has always stood for probity, industry and honor.

Henry Craver was born in Gloucester county, New Jersey, November 7, 1837, and died at Acme, Iowa, July 15, 1917, aged 79 years, 8 months and 8 days. The cause was cancer of the stomach and his illness was of short duration. With his parents he came to Poweshiek county in 1850 settling along the line of the present Oskaloosa road in Sugar Creek township. He was the second of sixteen brothers and sisters. In October, 1861, he enlisted in Company E, Fourth Iowa cavalry, and was one of six brothers, who served in the Civil War, who with a cousin, Chas. F. Craver, made seven of this name from Sugar Creek township, who gave of their years to perpetuate an undivided republic. He served till the close of the war receiving his honorable discharge at the close.

Mr. Craver was married to Martha K. Hambleton, of the well known and honorable Hambleton family, also early settlers in the county. To them four children were born, all living: Mrs. Stella Searight and Alva Craver, both of Harvey, Ill., Ed. E. Craver, of Riceville, Iowa, and Henry W. Craver, of Chicago.

In 1879 Mr. Craver and family came to Grinnell, where he entered the employ of Craver & Steele and went with the firm to Harvey in 1889. Since that time he has lived elsewhere.

The body was brought to Grinnell Wednesday morning and taken to Hazelwood, where a short service was held.

Mr. Craver's wife survives him, but was unable to be present at the burial.

Relatives present from out of town at his burial were: C.C. Craver and Thomas Craver, of Deep River; Dr. A.S. Craver, of Harvey, Ill.; Mr. and Mrs. T.S. Craver, Mr. and Mrs. O. Goodner, Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Craver, Geo. Craver and D. Allen of Searsboro; Mrs. J.A. Craver and G. Stillwell of Moore, and Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Watson.
