The Grinnell Herald (Grinnell, Iowa) Aug. 31, 1909

MRS. CHAS. PENFIELD

Hannah J. Nelson was born January 4, 1835, in New Jersey, and died August 26, 1909.

She was married to John Davis, who gave his life for his country in the war of 1861. She was the mother of six children, three of whom are living. June 11, 1884, she was married to Chas. G. Penfield and coming into his home was to his four boys a mother indeed and as a tribute of their love they are here today.

Her life was one of loving service and unselfish sacrifice. Her Christian life commenced in early childhood. She was converted and joined the M.E. church and nearly thirty years ago, under the preaching of Rev. Barton in Grinnell, she experienced entire sanctification. She was an exemplary and faithful Christian and true to God and the cause of righeousness, a faithful wife, a loving mother and a sympathizing and helpful friend and neighbor. Never a word of complaint or of harshness ever escaped her lips, but charity for all.

The funeral services were conducted at her home Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock by Rev. Elias Handy, assisted by Rev. A.S. Cochran and Rev. T.B. Hughes.

Friends from out of town who attended the Mrs. Penfield funeral were Fred Penfield and wife of Little Falls, Minn.; C.L. Penfield and son Carroll of Harvey, Ill.; Herman R. Penfield and wife of Riverdale, Ill.; Dr. Penfield of Conrad, Ia.; Rev. C.G. Penfield, Henry Craver of Marshalltown; T.S. Craver and daughter Mary of New Sharon; Mrs. Jennie Thomas of Searsboro; Mrs. Mary Moody of Lynnville.
