CHARLES EDWARD JOHNSTON

Funeral services were held for Charles Edward Johnston, 96, of Montezuma on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at Watts Funeral Home, Montezuma with Dr. George M. Salnave of the First Presbyterian Church and Rev. Burr Bryant of the Montezuma United Methodist, officiating.

Music was provided by Mr. Keith Heidemann, soloist and Mrs. Kathleen Ramsey, organist.

Casket bearers were Tom Hicks, Brent Matthias, Shane Heidemann, Jeremy Heidemann, Keith Heidemann, Erik Johnston, Jason Heidemann and Craig Smolley.

Honorary casket bearers were Donald Watson, Mike Ammann, Eugene Merck and George Peters.

A Masonic Service was held Monday, Jan. 8, 2001 with members of the Lafayette Lodge No. 52 A.F. & A.M.

Interment was in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma, Iowa.

Charles Edward Johnston died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001 at Friendship Manor Care Centre in Grinnell.

He was born Nov. 6, 1904 on the family farm northeast of Montezuma, the son of John C. and Frances Mae (Lineweaver) Johnston. He attended country school.

On March 19, 1930 he was married to Helen Mary Ammann at Deep River. To this union three children were born: Beverly, Dean and Stanley. He farmed all his life in Scott Township and Charlie also ran a repair shop overhauling tractors and etc. until the mid 1960s. Helen died Dec. 10, 1967.

On March 14, 1969 he married Evelyn Martin at Montezuma. Evelyn died Jan. 7, 1999.

Charles had served as a director of Scott #8 School, as a Scott Township Trustee for several years, he was a longtime member of Farm Bureau, served on numerous committees for ASC, was over a 50-year Mason and member of the Lafayette Lodge No. 52 A.F. & A.M. at Montezuma and was a member of the Montezuma Lion's Club and Midway Grange. He was also a member of the Fairview Church and served as Sunday School Treasurer for many years until it closed and then transferred his membership to the Montezuma United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and enjoyed Methodist Men's activities.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his two wives.

Charles is survived by his family, Beverly and Richard Hicks of Denver, Iowa, Dean and Ruth Johnston of Montezuma, and Stanley Johnston of Addison, Texas; a step-daughter, Patricia and Donald Watson of Reinbeck, Iowa; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; Brenda and Keith Heidemann, Shane and wife Jessie, Jason and Jeremy; Nancy and Craig Smolley, Stacey and Erica; Tom and Dawn Hicks, Dani and Joseph; Kari and Brent Matthias, Brenden and Kali; Erik Johnston; and Jennifer and Junior Norris, Jenna and Dakota; five step-grandchildren, Glenda, Kevin, Carolyn, Elaine and Donna; several step-great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
