STATIA RAY SERVICES HELD

Statia Ray, 92, died Sunday afternoon, Aug. 8, at the Montezuma Senior Home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ray were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wedneday at the Smith Funeral Home, with Elder Fred Phipps of LeGrand officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner. Pallbearers were Harold Haines, William Keisey, Ross Mintle, Dale Ray, Rolland Ray and Paul Wilson. Burial was at Rock Creek Cemetery west of Grinnell.

The daughter of General Washington and Laura Young Adkins, she was born May 26, 1890, in Rock Creek Township, Jasper County. She attended rural school near her home.

On March 20, 1907, she was married to Delbert Ray at Marshalltown. The couple farmed in the Turner area southwest of Grinnell, later moving to Marshalltown. They returned to Grinnell in 1954. Mrs. Ray spent the last 14 years in Grinnell and Montezuma retirement homes.

She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and the Victor Grange.

Survivors include her daughter, Thelma Garrett of rural Pine River, Minn.; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Cretia Strasser and Corda Haines, both of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1954 and one brother, Cash O. Adkins.
