MRS. ELLEN CARTER DIES SATURDAY, RITES WEDNESDAY

Mrs. Ellen L. Carter, 81, widow of Horace Carter of Grinnell, died Saturday morning at a Waterloo hospital. She had been ill for the past few weeks but had been hospitalized only one day.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home with Dr. Leland W. Mann, pastor of the Congregational church, officiating, assisted by the Rev. E.E. Clements of Marshalltown. Organist will be Norman Goodbrod.

Mrs. Carter had been living at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.W. Pearson for about a year in Waterloo.

She was the daughter of John and Phoebe Patterson Smith, and was born in Sheridan township on Sept. 5, 1878. She attended the local Sheridan rural schools and graduated from Toledo high school.

On Oct. 2, 1911 she was united in marriage with Horace Melvin Carter in Grinnell. Three daughters survive her: Mrs. A.W. (Eva) Pearson of Waterloo; Mrs. Cliff (Mary) Benton of San Diego, Calif.; and Mrs. J.A. (Virginia) Barnes of Houston, Texas.

Also surviving are four sisters: Mrs. Dora Bilney of Estherville, Mrs. Becca Graham of Gilman, Mrs. Clara Samborn of Tama, and Mrs. E.E. Clements of Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1955, a child in infancy, four brothers, and four sisters.

Mrs. Carter had lived in the Grinnell area most of her life.
