HORACE CARTER HERE 50 YEARS DIES FRIDAY

Leather Cutter For Many Years Had Been Ill For Long Time

Horace M. Carter, 1030 Elm street, died at his home Friday, March 11, following an illness of several years. He was 83 years old.

Resident of the Grinnell community for 50 years, he had been employed for many years in the old Spauding Buggy factory and in recent years had been a church custodian.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon, March 15, from Smith Funeral Home with Rev. John DeLong of Grinnell and Rev. E.E. Clements of Laurel officiating.

Born July 21, 1871 at Ripley, Ohio, he was the son of Daniel Boone and Frances Burnett Carter. He had lived in Iowa most of his life coming to Grinnell from Keota.

He was married Oct. 2, 1911 at Grinnell to Ellen Smith. He was a leather cutter for the buggy factory for many years.

Surviving also are three step-children, Mrs. A.W. (Eva) Pearson of Waterloo; Mrs. Cliff (Mary) Benton of San Diego, Calif.; and Mrs. J.A. (Virginia) Barnes of Houston, Texas; and a brother, Thomas J. Carter of Grinnell.

Burial will be at Sheridan cemetery northeast of Grinnell.
