WALTER HANSSEN
Walter "Boy" Hanssen, 83, of Rte. 3, Grinnell, died Friday, Sept. 8, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Gerald Brown officiating. Organist was Margaret Wheeler, and vocalists were Ruth Ann Dayton and Wilma Schmitz.
Pallbearers were Ed Beach, Francis Cunningham, Donald Edelen, Randy Hanssen, Steve Hanssen, Randy Lidtka, Eldon Snook and Ron Weuve. Honorary bearers were Ronald Baltisberger, Virgil Broders, Conrad DeBondt, Keith Edelen, Curtis Ferneau, Merle Harris, Robert Herzberg, Claire Hutchison, Laverne Kelm, William Neville, Louis Puls and Farrel Siehl.
Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the American Diabetes Association.
The son of Peter and Renate "Nettie" Dosdall Hanssen, he was born Aug. 5, 1906, in Sheridan Township. He attended Sheridan No. 8 School.
He was married to Thelma Baustian Oct. 21, 1951, at her parents' home in Malcom. Mr. Hanssen farmed on the family farm all of his life.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served as church treasurer and a member of the church council. He was also a member of the Sheridan Township Board of Trustees for over 50 years and was a mebmer of the Farm Bureau.
Surviving are his wife and one sister, Dorothy Plum of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Arthur.
