THELMA E. HANSSEN
Thelma E. Hanssen, 86, of Grinnell died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at St. Francis Manor.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Dec. 6, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Malcom, with the Rev. Herb Knudten, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist will be Denise Baustian and vocal music will be by Mr. Knudten. Casket bearers will be Gene Gritsch, Don Ahrens, Clair Hutchison, Steve Hanssen, Randy Hanssen and Denny Harris. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home beginning at 12 noon on Thursday. The family will be present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery Association.
She was born Feb. 6, 1916, in Sheridan Township to Ben Edward and Martha Adele Neville Baustian. She was raised in Sheridan Township and attended rural school. In 1933 she graduated from Malcom High School and later attended the former Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. She taught rural school in Sheridan Township and in the Malcom school system. She later worked for Grinnell College and for many years was a cashier for the former Poweshiek County National Bank, retiring in 1978.
On Oct. 27, 1951, she was married to Walter Hanssen in Malcom. The couple lived in the Malcom area and operated a grain and livestock farm. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Malcom Study Club.
She is survived by one brother George Baustian of Malcom and two nieces, Denise Baustian of Grinnell and Char Weuve of Cedar Rapids. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and one sister, Muriel Baustian.
