PETER JACOB HANSSEN
Peter Jacob Hanssen was born in Sleswig-Holstein, Germany, May 20, 1840. In 1866 he left Europe for America and spent his first two months at Valparaiso, Ind. Here he was united in marriage with Miss W. Stoldt. They journeyed west and made their abode at Davenport, Scott county, Iowa, where they resided for 19 years. It was in Scott county where their union was blessed with four children, three still surviving. In 1885 the Peter Hanssen family located in Poweshiek county, residing in Malcom township, devoting their time to farming. It is here where deceased spent 34 years of his life in Malcom and Sheridan townships with his children. Some twenty years ago he retired from active life. He enjoyed years of good health and prosperity. Three years ago his dear wife passed away. Since these days of grief and mourning it could be noticed that deceased began to fail. He passed away at the home of his daughter, Johanna Rehberg, on the farm, Monday morning at 3 o'clock. The cause of his death was heart failure. He reached the ripe age of 78 years, 7 months and 17 days.
He leaves to mourn three half-brothers, Hans Hanssen, Germany, and John Hanssen of Chicago, and Claus Hanssen of Davenport, Ia., three children, Albert Hanssen, Henry Hanssen and Johanna Rehberg, and eight grandchildren. Two half-sisters still reside in Germany.
Mrs. Wm. Hartman, of Des Moines, was also present at his bedside.
We extend our sincere sympathy.
