JOHN F. SIEHL RITES TUESDAY

John F. Siehl, 85, of Rte. 3, Grinnell, died Sunday afternoon at Friendship Manor nursing home where he had lived the past three months. He had made his home five miles north of Grinnell since 1934 until his health required hospitalization the past two years.

He was the son of Hans and Mary Kroeger Siehl and was born near Blue Grass, Iowa, on Nov. 20, 1885. When he was a small boy, his parents moved to a farm west of Grinnell. They later lived in Sheridan Township where he attended school. His mother died when he was 10 years old.

On Feb. 14, 1912, he married Stella Baustian of Malcom. The couple had three children--Farrell Siehl of Rte. 3, Grinnell; Mrs. Merle (Blanche) Harris of Rte. 1, Gilman; and Mrs. Keith (Dona Fae) Park of Iowa City. Mr. and Mrs. Siehl farmed six miles east of Gilman until 1934 when they moved to their farm home north of Grinnell.

Mr. Siehl was noted throughout the Midwest as a leader in the field of raising registered Belgian horses and purebred Hereford cattle. He was a member of the Iowa Hereford Association and the American Hereford Association and had shown cattle and horses at the Iowa State Fair and several national showings.

He is survived by his three children; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Hans Siehl of Montezuma; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Stella in 1949, four sisters and one grandson.

Funeral services for Mr. Siehl will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. L. Willard Reynolds, minister of the Chester United Church of Christ, officiating.

Burial will be in Chester Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials in Mr. Siehl's name may be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of Mrs. Wayne Reams. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.
