OBITUARY

Joel Dunton, son of John and Elsi Dunton, was born in Berkshire County, Mass., June 3rd, 1823 and died Aug. 6th, 1909 aged 86 yrs., 2 mons. and 3 days. He with his parents moved to Oneida County, New York, remaining there until 1843 when they moved to Tuscarawas County, Ohio. In 1855 they continued their journey westward settling in Bureau County, Ill. About the year 1867 they moved to Lincoln township, Poweshiek County, Iowa and later to his present home in Brooklyn, Iowa.

He was united in marriage to Mary A. Shull May 12th, 1850. To this union was born nine children, four of which have passed to the other shore. His church affiliations were first with the Moravian church later, with the Brethren church June 5th, 1899 continuing until death. Father Dunton has been known by the citizens of Brooklyn and vicinity for many years. He was a lover of company and always enjoyed the conversation of his acquaintances. His interst in his church has been that of the highest, coming to service many times when physical conditions were against him.

The last communion service he was permitted to attend he expressed his appreciation of being there. The last few months he was not only confined to his bed but unable to hold a conversation or make his wants known. Thru the grace of God, and the faithful attendance of his noble companion and the rest of the family he bore his affliction patiently to the end. He leaves behind his companion, three sons and two daughters to mourn their loss. The funeral services were largely attended which shows the high esteem in which he was held. The services were conducted by his former pastor Rev. S.B. Grisso of Cerro Gordo, Ill. assisted by Mrs. Clara Flora present pastor of Des Moines, Iowa. Burial in the Moravian church cemetery.
