JOHN "JACK" WAKELEY

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 27, at Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma, for John "Jack" Wakeley, 76, of Malcom, who died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, from a liver ailment. The Rev. Keith Briggs, Pastor at Grinnell Regional Medical Center, officiated. Burial was at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom.

Music was provided by Darrell Brand, soloist, and Kathleen Ramsey, organist. Songs were "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Honorary casket bearers were Garland Wiley, Leo Altemeier, Walter Lemke and Ike Griffith. Casket bearers were Kevin Kirby, Jason Hall, Jeff Hall, Chad Coburn, Nick Grim, Ben Grim, Stanley Altemeier, Joshua Coburn and Ryan Scott.

The son of William and Vera Horst Wakeley, Jack was born June 27, 1924, in Tilden, Neb. He attended school in Searsboro, Ia. and when he was 11 years old went to live with his foster parents, Hiriam and Vivian Morrow, in Montezuma, Ia. Hiriam and Vivian raised Jack.

He graduated from Montezuma High School with the class of 1943 and joined the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater. On Aug. 2, 1947, he married Anna Mae McNaul, in Newton, Ia. They started farming in 1948, and, for a short time, Jack worked as a farmhand in Fremont, Ia. In 1958, they moved to Malcom, Ia., where he worked for the town as marshal and city laborer for 23 years, retiring in 1985. In 1968, he was appointed Sheriff for six months. After retirement, he mowed grass for the Malcom Cemetery and Malcom Manor.

Jack was a former member of the American Legion. He was a member of the Malcom Fire Department and served on the Zoning Committee in Malcom. He also served on the Cemetery Board in Malcom and Malcom Manor. He enjoyed camping, traveling, and his horses.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Mae, of Malcom; six daughters and five sons-in-law, Janet and Richard Kirby of Malcom, Linda and Butch Grim of Bloomfield, Ia., Carol and Kenneth Graff of Malcom, Donna Coburn of Brooklyn, Ia., Susan and Stanley Altemeier of Newton, Ia., and Julia and Rick Scott of Audubon, Ia.; one son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Judith Wakeley of Malcom; 16 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Jane Bunick of Madison, Neb.; two step-sisters, Eleanor Cates of Scio, Ore. and Nancy McKay of Bend, Ore.; a step-brother, Charles Hyde of China; two foster-sisters, Frances Schlesselman of Malcom and Elaine Willis of Cedar Rapids, Ia.; and a foster-brother, Bob Morrow of Montezuma, Ia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, foster parents, two brothers, two sisters, and a foster brother.

Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma was in charge of arrangements.
