JOSEPH BAIRD RITES HELD FRIDAY

Funeral services for Joseph Baird were conducted by the Rev. Martin Gruneich Friday afternoon, February 20, at the Steffy Funeral Home. Music was provided by soloist Mrs. Keith Stahl accompanied by organist Miss Alice Underwood.

Casket bearers were Jack Wakeley, John McNaul, Harold McNaul, John Griffin, Robert Story and William Gregory. Interment was at Jackson Township Cemetery.

Mr. Baird, 58, passed away Tuesday, February 17, at his home in Montezuma.

The son of Mary and Elmer Baird, he was born near Montezuma Oct. 17, 1911.

He attended the local school and helped with the work on the farm.

On Nov. 28, 1934, he was united in marriage with Tonnie Griffin and to this union two children were born. They lived on a farm and later moved to Belle Plaine where he was a partner in a tire shop. In 1949 they returned to Montezuma where he was employed by various business firms. In 1957 they purchased the Courtney Cafe and operated it until 1961 when they bought the Groenenboom Nursing Home. They have since managed it as a custodial home.

He was a member of the Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles.

He is survived by his wife; a son Bud of Montezuma; a daughter, Betty Lou Roof, two grandsons, Joe and Donnie Roof, all of Grinnell.
