HAZEL BYERS RITES WEDNESDAY

Hazel Byers, 80, of rural Brooklyn died Saturday, Jan. 16, at Grinnell General Hospital.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn, with the Rev. Raymond Moore officiating. Pallbearers were Gene Morgan, Larry Dayton, Randy Latcham, Eugene Merck, Mervin Morgan and Robert Little. Honorary bearers were Denver Miles, Robert Morgan, Freeman Dayton and Charles Johnston. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma, with the Watts Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

She was born on May 26, 1907, the daughter of Carl and Lizzie Carlsen. She graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1925. She taught school before her marriage to Alfred Byers on May 16, 1928. The couple moved to the Byers farm where she continued to reside until her death.

Mrs. Byers was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Brooklyn for over 60 years. She was a member of the Fairfield Ladies Aid, a charter member of the Willing Workers Club and a member of the Poweshiek County Farm Bureau.

She is survived by two sons, Myron of Montezuma and Lowell of Lakewood, Colo.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Verna Behounek of Grinnell; and one brother, Harold Carlsen of Brooklyn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and two brothers, George and Leslie Carlsen.
