ALFRED H. BYERS

Services for a longtime farmer, Alfred Henry Byers, were conducted by the Rev. Raymond Moore, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church of Brooklyn, Monday afternoon, Oct. 26, at Watts Funeral Home. Music was provided by soloists Darrell Brand and Calvin Roudabush and organist Kathleen Ramsey. Casket bearers were Gene Morgan, Randy Latcham, Howard Johnston, Eugene Merck, Dennis Latcham and James Smothers. Honorary bearers were Robert Morgan, Denver Miles and Freeman Dayton. Burial was at Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma.

Mr. Byers, 82, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1987, at Mahaska County Hospital, Oskaloosa.

He was born on the family farm in Scott Township on March 11, 1905. He attended Scott No. 7 School and farmed all of his life on the farm where he was born. On May 16, 1928 he was married to Hazel Dorothy Carlsen of Brooklyn. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church at Brooklyn and the Poweshiek County Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel; two sons and their wives, Myron and Sarah Byers of Montezuma and Lowell and Doris Byers of Lakewood, Colo.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Tom (Neola) Osborn of Newton and Mrs. Walter (Lola) Johnston of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, three brothers and three sisters. Memorials should be made to Grace United Methodist Church, Brooklyn.
