VERNA E. BEHOUNEK

Verna E. Behounke, 95, of Grinnell died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A funeral service was held Saturday, April 8, at Nevenhoven Funeral Home in Brooklyn with Dennis Smith, pastor of Madison Church of Christ, officiating. Musician was Marilyn Kriegel. Casketbearers were Larry Wilson, Don Bauman, Myron Byers, Karl Byers, Scott Wilson and Larry Dayton. Interment was in Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery.

She was born Verna Elizabeth Carlsen to Carl and Lizzie Wylie Carlsen on April 25, 1910, in Brooklyn. She was a graduate of Brooklyn High School and taught in a one-room school. She was married to Edward Leo Behounek on May 16, 1936, in Marshalltown. They farmed ten miles north of Brooklyn for over 30 years. In 1966 they moved to Grinnell, then back to Brooklyn in 1974. They returned to Grinnell in 1978. She was very sports-minded, especially enjoying basketball and baseball.

She is survived by one son Daryl Behounek of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and four brothers and sisters, Leslie Carlsen, Harold Carlsen, Hazel Byers and George Carlsen.
