COUNTY'S OLDEST MAN DIES

MALCOM--Poweshiek county's oldest citizen, John Hinegardner, Malcom, died Feb. 9 at St. Francis hospital Grinnell, following a short illness. Funeral services were conducted at the Bramer Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Sunday by the Rev. Donald Woogie.

Burial was in Ivy Hill cemetery, Malcom, beside Mrs. Hinegardner who died in 1949. Flower bearers were Miss Lucy Schneekloth and Mrs. Josie Schneekloth. Casket bearers were Ward Puls, Earl Alertson, Dean Courtney, Lester Schneekloth, Ralph Wentzel and Scott Cummings.

On his birthday, Sept. 25, 1959, The Montezuma Republican had a feature about John who said it was his 100th birthday anniversary and his 82nd year in Poweshiek county. John was born in Harrisonburg, Va., a son of Jacob Hinegardner, who had been a sergeant in the Southern forces during the Civil War. The family, Jacob and Lydia Hinegardner and their eight children came to Malcom area from West Virginia when John was 17 and made their home on a farm.

For many years he worked for Joseph and Grover Eisele, then moved into Malcom and became a well digger, the Malcom well being a product of his skill.

He was united in marriage with Matilda Shine, Malcom, and to this union there were nine children. Surviving are Ray, Mrs. James Humes and Mrs. Genevieve Decker, all of Malcom; Carl of Newton and Harold of Grinnell; seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.
