ROSA SMITH

With the passing away of Mrs. Rosa Smith, Hartwick lost one of its lifetime residents. Death came at the home of her son, Raymon and daughter-in-law at Hartwick on Dec. 21.

Rosalie Decker Smith was born the daughter of James P. Decker and Nancy Sumner Decker on Oct. 14, 1872 in Jefferson Township, Poweshiek county.

She was united in marriage to Harvey B. Smith on Nov. 8, 1890 in Jefferson Township.

To this union were born six sons, namely Homer of Ottumwa, Royal of Belle Plaine, Rolla of Montezuma, Raymon of Hartwick, Sealy and Marvin who are deceased.

The family farmed until 1914 when they moved to Hartwick.

Her husband passed away on March 14, 1935. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Smith remained in her home until recently when she made her home with her son and daughter-in-law.

Mrs. Smith was a very helpful person to people who had illness in their homes. No task was ever too difficult for her. She also enjoyed her garden and flowers in the summer.

Besides her sons and daughters-in-law, she leaves to mourn two sisters, Mrs. Lottie McCarty of Farimont, Minn., and Mrs. Ada Koep of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, several grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of friends.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from Bramer's Funeral Home in Brooklyn with Bro. Carl Nelson of Ottumwa officiating.

Pall bearers were Virgil Aikens, Lester Smith, Wayne Smith, Warren Smith, Wallace Smith, and Ralph Smith. The latter five are grandsons and Virgil Aikens is the husband of a granddaughter.

Burial was made at Kent Cemetery.
