VERN MILLGATE

Vern Millgate, 97, of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, formerly of Grinnell, died Monday, Feb. 14, at the Veterans Home.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Organist will be Margaret Wheeler. Pallbearers will be Carl Binegar, August DeVault, Raymond King, Warren Miller, Marlyn Olson, Edwin Richardson and Gerald Sampson.

Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery southwest of Grinnell, with fraternal rites conducted by Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 273 of Grinnell and flag presentation by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Memorials in Mr. Millgate's name may be made to the Kellogg Historical Society.

The son of George and Roxy Foster Millgate, he was born Nov. 17, 1896, in Rock Creek Township in Jasper County west of Grinnell. He attended rural school in Richland Township, and he also attended the St. Joseph Veterinary School in St. Joseph, Mo. During World War I he served with the U.S. Army in the 88th Division Medical Corps.

He was married to Opal Gladys Hay Nov. 27, 1922, in Newton. The couple farmed southwest of Grinnell and later lived in Boone and Rock Island. They returned to Grinnell in January 1930, and Mr. Millgate worked for Maytag Co. in Newton and, for 31 years, Iowa Southern Utilities Co. in Grinnell.

He was a member of Hermon Masonic Lodge of Grinnell, Focht-Tennant American Legion Post No. 53 and the World War I Hopeful Barracks.

Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Fern Beitner of Iowa City and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Sylvester and Oliver; and one daughter, Maria Hamilton.
