FUNERAL SERVICES ARE HELD SUNDAY FOR NELSON BRIGGS

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Smith Funeral Home for Nelson Briggs, sr., 58, who died Saturday morning following a lingering illness of two and one-half years. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery. The Rev. C.R. Rowe of the M.E. church conducted the services.

Nelson Jeptha Briggs was born Nov. 27, 1880, near Chandlerville, Cass county, Illinois. While he was yet a little child, the family moved to Logan county, Illinois. Here he attended public schools and grew to manhood.

He was married Dec. 18, 1907 to Miss Ferne Huff at Delavan, Ill. They were the parents of six children, four sons and two daughters. One son, James, preceded him in death in 1919. The two daughters died in infancy. Remaining children are Nelson, jr., Newton; Russell, Omaha, Nebr. and Clifford of Kansas City, Mo. There are three grandchildren.

Other relatives are five sisters and two brothers: namely, Mrs. Lydia Lamb of Perry; Mrs. Mary Briggs of Minneapolis; Mrs. Hattie Long, Mrs. Iva Stromberg and Mrs. Grace Stevens, all of Davenport; Jesse C. of Fairfield and John E. of Perry. One brother preceded him in death.

Mr. Briggs always followed the occupation of farming and failing health in 1936 forced him to stop. Since then he had been an invalid.

Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Briggs, jr. and Betty of Newton; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Briggs of Omaha, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Briggs of Kansas City, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. E.Y. Lamb, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Clements, Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Knapp and John E. Briggs, all of Perry; Jesse C. Briggs and sons William, Curtis and Woodrow of Fairfield; Rev. and Mrs. Otto Durr of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Hattie Long, Jack Long, Vivian Long, Mrs. Iva Stromberg, Mrs. Grace Stevens and Miss Helen Wichmann, all of Davenport.
