BILLIE J. SUMNER

Billie J. Sumner, 64, of Grinnell died of cancer Tuesday, May 2, at her home.

Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Grinnell Christian Church, with the Rev. John Epperson officiating. Pallbearers will be John Adams, Tony McKinnley, Bob Penne, Mike Shope, Matt Sullivan and Jeff Weitzell. Honorary bearers will be Steve Phipps, Lana Ross, Terry Van Rheenen, Rob and Russ Vest, and Cindy Weitzell. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery, with the Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

The daughter of Hubert and Lenora Shadden Shope, she was born May 2, 1936, in Grinnell. She was a 1954 graduate of Grinnell High School.

She was married to Charles D. Sumner June 6, 1954, in rural Grinnell. They lived in Grinnell and in several communities in California prior to moving to Lees Summit, Mo. They returned to Grinnell 1968 where they owned and operated Sumner Photography.

She retired in 1995 and sold the business to her son, Joseph. Mrs. Sumner was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church and Beulah Chapter No. 47 of Order of Eastern Star.

Surviving are four sons, Charles of Kellogg and Gordon, Gregory and Joseph, all of Grinnell; one sister, Olive Weitzell of Tama; one brother, Jim Shope of Tama; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Her parents and husband preceded her in death.

Memorial contributions may be made to her church or Grinnell Regional Hospice.
