CHARLES D. SUMNER

Charles D. Sumner, 54, of Grinnell died of a heart ailment Thursday, Feb. 9, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Epperson of the Grinnell Christian Church officiating. Organist was Kathleen Heffner.

Pallbearers were Boyd Arthur, Mike Bales, Bryan Davis, Brent Hasselbrink, Gary Latcham and Glenn Thompson. Honorary bearers were Larry Cox, Kirby Criswell, Bob Penne, Steve Phipps and Terry Van Rhennen.

Masonic rites were conducted by members of Hermon Masonic Lodge. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Memorials in Mr. Sumner's name may be left at the funeral home.

He was the son of Charles Irwin and June Drayton Castle Sumner and was born Jan. 15, 1935, at Ottumwa. He and his family moved to Grinnell where he graduated from Grinnell High School in 1953. He also attended Iowa State University.

He was married to Billie Jeanne Shope June 6, 1954. The couple lived in Grinnell, Wisconsin, California and Lees Summit, Mo. They returned to Grinnell in 1968 where they owned and operated Sumner Photography. For the past few years Mr. Sumner had operated a computer service and bowling shop.

He was a member of Beulah Chapter No. 47, Order of Eastern Star; Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 273; and several bowling leagues in Grinnell and Newton.

Surviving are his wife, Billie; four sons, Charles of Kellogg, Gordon of Portland, Ore., and Gregory and Joseph, both of Grinnell; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
