LOWELL CORKERY DIES; LAST RITES SATURDAY

Lowell B. Corkery, 48, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 31) at his apartment in the Astir-Corkery-Switzer Motel east of Grinnell. Death was due to an apparent heart condition.

The son of Harry and Anna D. Riley Corkery, Mr. Corkery was born on a farm near Fayette, Iowa, on Dec. 21, 1920. He attended the schools at Fayette and graduated from Upper Iowa University where he was on the football team.

Following his graduation, he enlisted in the service and served in the Air Force for 20 years until his discharge in 1963 with the rank of Major. During this time he was overseas for five years and prior to his discharge was Launch Control Maintenance Officer with the Jupiter Missile system at Izmir, Turkey.

On June 4, 1955, Mr. Corkery married Margaret Johnson in London, England. Following his discharge he served as a field man for the Farm Bureau at Jewell, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Corkery purchased the former Switzer Motel five years ago.

Mr. Corkery was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church, the Knight's of Columbus and Grinnell Focht-Tennant Post No. 53 of the American Legion. He also served as district president of the Iowa Motel Association in 1966-67.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; two children, Michael, 10, and Connie, 9; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Corkery of Fayette, Iowa; three brothers, Lt. Col. Eugene Corkery, USAF, of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., John Corkery of Marion, Iowa, and James Corkery of Independence, Iowa; and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Margaret) Cain of Burlington and Miss Lois Ann Corkery of Tipton.

Requim Mass for Mr. Corkery will be said Saturday morning, (Jan. 4) at St. Francis Catholic church in Fayette, Iowa. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery at Fayette.

The Rosary was recited at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, at the Smith Funeral Home.
