FRANK HENRY BENESH

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 17, at 1:30 p.m. at the McAninch-Fremming Funeral Home in Victor for Frank H. Benesh, 88, of Brooklyn. Mr. Benesh, a retired farmer and tiling contractor, died Wednesday, March 14, 1984 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City.

Officiating at the funeral services was the Rev. Lynn Williams, pastor of the First United Presbyterian Church at Brooklyn.

Mrs. William Alexander of Victor accompanied Mrs. Harlan Kluber of Guernsey as she sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus."

In care of flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Don DeWitte and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Evans, Brooklyn.

Concluding services and burial were held at the Guernsey Cemetery with Arlo Benesh of Marion, Charles and Faye Benesh of Cedar Rapids, Dennis Wherry of Onalaska, Wash., Raymond Tumilty of Vinton and Merrill Wherry of Grinnell, serving as casket-bearers.

Honorary casket-bearers were David Michalek of East Moline, Ill., Daniel Michalek of Eldridge, Douglas Michalek of Victor, Jeff Benesh of Centerville, Wayne Jones of Melbourne, Fla., Worthin Grattan of Grinnell, Dennis Williams of Newton, Paul Kriegel of Malcom, Carl Iezek of Chelsea and Robert DeMeyer of Davenport.

Military rites at the graveside were conducted by members of the Francis Gallagher Post No. 294 of the American Legion from Brooklyn.

Frank Henry Benesh was born Feb. 6, 1896 near Amana, Iowa. He was the son of Frank, Sr. and Sarah (Heim) Benesh.

He attended rural schools in the Benton County area.

A member of the United States Army, Mr. Benesh served his country during the first World War with the 212th Engineers Company. Following his honorable discharge in January of 1919 he returned to Iowa.

On July 2, 1919 he married Anna L. Wherry at her parents' home at Guernsey.

They farmed for 31 years in Benton and Poweshiek counties. For over 25 years he was a tiling contractor.

Mr. Benesh was a 50 year member of the Francis Gallagher Post of the American Legion at Brooklyn.

He is survived by his wife, Anne, of nearly 65 years; two daughters, Dorothy Benesh of Newton and Sarah, Mrs. Don Michalek of Victor; a son, Loyal of Brooklyn; 12 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Also surviving are three sisters; Sarah Glassley of Thermopolis, Wyo., Catherine Primrose of Atkins, Iowa, and Mabel Tumilty of Shellsburg; and one brother, Leroy Benesh of Wenatchee, Wash.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
