DOROTHY BENESH

Dorothy Benesh, 84, of Grinnell died Sunday, Dec. 19, at St. Francis Manor.

A funeral service was held Wednesday, at Grinnell Christian Church with John Epperson, pastor of the church, officiating. Music was by Kathleen McCune, pianist, and students from Central Iowa Christian School. Casket bearers were her grandchildren, Edward Grattan, Lynn Nixon, John Tool, Todd DeSmidt, Laura Grimes, Michael Jones, Angie Jones, Robert Williams and Eric Williams. Burial was in Union Cemetery in Newton. Memorials may be made to the hospice of Grinnell Regional Medical Center, American Cancer Society or St. Francis Manor and sent to Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell IA 50112.

She was born July 25,1920, in Atkins, the daughter of Frank and Anna Wherry Benesh. She attended school in Guernsey. She was married to Chester M. Jones on March 25, 1938, in Oskaloosa. The couple lived in Brooklyn where she was a member of the Southside Club. In 1958 they moved to Newton where she worked at a variety store and for Spurgeon's Department Store for 30 years. She moved to St. Francis Manor in July, 2004. She enjoyed raising parakeets, gardening, sewing and quilting.

She is survived by two daughters, Maretta Grattan of Grinnell and Vy Tool-Christiansen of Rapid City, S.D.; one son Wayne Jones of Indian Rock Beach, Fla.; ten grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one sister Sarah Michalek of Victor and one brother Loyal Benesh of Brooklyn. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter Norlene DeSmidt-Williams.
