RITES FRIDAY FOR HORACE ADKINS, 71, WHO DIED TUESDAY

Horace J. Adkins, 71, Rte. 2, Grinnell, died about noon Tuesday at his farm home. He had been ill the last six weeks.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Morris Hay of Kellogg officiating. Organ music will be furnished by Mrs. Kathleen Heffner.

Pallbearers will be Dale Adkins, Roy Adkins, Loren Elliott, Claire Jackson, Harold Jackson and Joe Hotchkin. Burial will be in Rock Creek cemetery.

Mr. Adkins was the son of James Burton and Mary Ellen James Adkins and was born July 19th, 1889, at Bloomington, Wis. Later the family moved to Massachusetts and he attended Belchertown high school in Belchertown, Mass., and Williston Academy in Easthampton, Mass. He enrolled at Grinnell College and graduated with the class of 1912.

On May 21st, 1913, he was united in marriage with Alys Lenore Tarvestad by the Rev. James B. Adkins in Grinnell. To this union were born three children: Miss Ruth Ellen Adkins and Alvin H. Adkins, both residing at the family home; and Mrs. Arthur L. (Patricia Lucille) Smith, also of Grinnell.

Mr. Adkins had lived in the Grinnell and Rock Creek areas for the last 52 years. He had farmed for many of those years.

He is survived by his wife and three children as well as two grandchildren, Thomas and Patrick Smith; and two sisters, Mrs. Kitchell Andre of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Helen Bartlett of Pittsfield, Me. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
