VEDA I. ALLEN

Veda I. Allen, 96, of Grinnell, formerly of Searsboro, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at Friendship Manor.

A funeral service will be held Friday, Feb. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist will be Margaret Wheeler. Casket bearers will be her grandchildren. Interment will be in the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home Thursday beginning at 12 noon with family members present from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Dollars for Scholars and sent in care of Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.

She was born July 17, 1909, on the family farm near Searsboro to William and Julia Dearinger Gleason. She attended rural school and in June, 1928, received a high school diploma by correspondence from the American School in Chicago. She was married on Dec. 16, 1929, to Afton Ross Allen in Oskaloosa. They operated a grain and livestock farm south of Searsboro, and were the parents of three children, Wilbur Eugene, Julia Eunice and Oral Max Allen. She also worked in the housekeeping department at Grinnell College for over 20 years. Following her retirement, she moved to Grinnell and resided at Brookside South. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Rebekah Lodge and Bunker Hill Club of Searsboro.

She enjoyed gardening, reading, traveling and socializing with friends during a card or bingo game. She made quilts for each of her grandchildren and loved to watch her grandchildren and great grandchildren in their sports and school activities.

She is survived by one son Wilbur Allen of Grinnell and one daughter, Eunice Eversdyke of Abilene, Texas; eight grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Max Allen; two grandchildren; one sister, Elva Porter and two brothers, John and Chalman Gleason.
