LOIS E. MCCOSH CARTER, 95

Lois McCosh Carter, 95, of Grinnell, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 1996 at the Mayflower Health Care Center in Grinnell.

At Lois' request, her body was donated to the University of Iowa, Department of Anatomy, for medical research. Her cremains will be buried next to her husband in the Jackson Township Cemetery at Montezuma.

Lois E. McCosh Carter was born April 25, 1901 on a farm in Jasper County, Iowa, the youngest of nine daughters, to Maxwell and Matilda (Paul) McCosh. At the age of five years, she moved with her parents to a farm north of Grinnell. After graduation from high school she went to work for the Citizens National Bank in Grinnell as a bookkeeper and teller.

It must have been the love of the soil, the great out-of-doors and mother nature that took her back to the farm, when she married Harry W. Carter on June 10, 1925 at Woodburn, Iowa. They farmed near Montezuma and were involved in AAA work and the Farm Bureau. They became interested in the Co-operative field. Their business venture took them to Red Oak, Ames and finally to Waterloo, where they spent 19 1/2 years managing the Co-operative Service Company, dealing primarily in wholesale petroleum products. After the death of her husband in September 1962, she stayed in her home caring for a large yard, shrubs and flowers. Lois became a resident of the Mayflower Home in Grinnell in 1967.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry and eight sisters.

Lois is survived by nieces and nephews.

Watts Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
