JOHN STEEN SERVICES HELD

John Steen, 59, of Hopkinton, formerly of Grinnell, died Wednesday, May 9, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hopkinton, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello. The Rev. Donald Wahlgren officiated.

The son of Aaron and Edith Meyer Steen, he was born June 25, 1924, near Emmetsburg. He received his early education in the Grinnell schools, later moving to Monticello where he lived with his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Zimmerman.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as a military policeman. He later returned to the Monticello area.

He was married to Barbara E. Redmond on Sept. 25, 1948, in Monticello. They lived in the Monticello area, raising four children. Mr. Steen worked as a farmhand, then at the John Deere Implement dealership and for Harms Way Trucking.

He was married to Ella Ehlts Zumbrunnen on Sept. 4, 1964, and they lived in Monticello before moving to Hopkinton in 1968.

Mr. Steen was employed by Energy Manufacturing in Monticello for 14 years. He as a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Hopkinton, the Monticello VFW, and the Monticello Gun Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ella; two daughters, Carlene June of Newton, Kan., and Jo Ellen Holub of Marion; two sons, Robert of Cedar Rapids and Allen of Walker; three stepdaughters, Arlene Wilson of Des Moines, Wanita Zumbrunnen of St. Louis, Mo., and Gerri Westlund of White Bear, Minn.; one stepson, Glenn Zumbrunnen of Phoenix, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Ahlrichs of Monticello and Vera Deedrich of Grinnell; one half-sister, Hazel Miller of Altoona; and three half-brothers, Alvin Steen of Freeborn, Minn., Bill Steen of Des Moines and Alfred Steen of Searsboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one half-brother.
