OBITUARIES

EDITH VIRGINIA PIERCE

Deep River. Edith Virginia Pierce, 86 of Grinnell, Iowa died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the Mayflower Health Center after a long illness. Service: 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 17, at Holland-Coble Funeral Home, Montezuma, Iowa; Visitation: Friday, April 16 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial at Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River.

She is survived by sister Margaret Plagmann; sister-in-law Bessie Pollard; son John Casey Pierce and wife Charlotte of Deep River and a daughter, Karen Ann Pierce and husband Bill Hart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; four grandchildren, Benjamin Pierce and wife Ashley of Deep River, Amber Van Hamme and husband Tim of Victor, Iowa, Greg Wolfe of Washington, Iowa, and Abbey Woodward of Coralville, Iowa; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harry Hill Pierce; brother, James Hillman; and granddaughter, Samantha Pierce.

She was born May 31, 1923 in Lincoln Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa, the daughter of Harlan James and Myra Hollingsworth Hillman. She attended Morgan Rural School and graduated from Deep River High School in 1940. She graduated from Coe College, Cedar Rapids in 1945 with a degree in education. On November 22, 1945, she was united in marriage with Harry Pierce at the Presbyterian Church in Deep River.

She was a member of the United Church of Deep River and the First Presbyterian Church of Grinnell. Her interest in genealogy led to the establishment of the Poweshiek County Pioneer Cemetery Commission and her membership in the Poweshiek County Historical and Genealogical Society. For many years, she was a Hospice care giver throughout Poweshiek County. She loved gardening, photography, genealogy, fish, rocks, beading, and playing hymns on the piano but mostly, she loved people. She will be missed by many.

Memorials may be made to the United Church of Deep River.
