RITES HELD FOR MR. MCILRATH

J. Raymond McIlrath, 59, of Rte. 3, Grinnell, died Sunday evening at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

Funeral services for Mr. McIlrath were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home's east side facility with the Rev. Sam Reaves, pastor of the Grinnell Assembly of God Church, officiating. Music was provided by Alice Renaud, organist, and Virgil and Ruth Palmer and Delmar and Norma Jean Sharp, vocalists. Pallbearers were John Bailey, Ervin Claus, Don Humphrey, Charles Smith, Don Weaver and Doyle Weaver. Burial was at Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman.

The son of John and Corissa Milligan McIlrath, he was born Sept. 23, 1918, near Newburg. He attended school at Newburg and was graduated from Laurel High School in 1937. He farmed in the Newburg and Laurel area most of his life.

On June 1, 1941, he was married to Alice Scofield at Green Castle, Mo. The couple had five children. Mr. McIlrath was past president of the Newburg School Board and served on the board of directors of the Gilman-Laurel Co-op Elevator.

Survivors include his wife, Alice; his children, Robert L. McIlrath of Fort Myers, Fla., Wendy K. Hurley of Des Moines, Mrs. Bruce (Norma) Ryan of Gilman, and Dennis E. McIlrath of Marshalltown; his father and step-mother, John and Bertha McIlrath of Grinnell; four grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Donald (Alberta) King of Grinnell; and two step-sisters, Mrs. Clayton (Bonnie) Tew of Grinnell and Mrs. Earl (Doris) Steward of Marshalltown. He was preceded in death by his mother; one son, John, who died in 1968; one brother, J. Kenneth McIlrath; and one sister, Mrs. Helen Fuller.
