LOUIS SMOTHERS

Louis Smothers, 78, of Newton died Saturday, April 29, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at Reese Chapel in Newton, with burial in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma.

He was the son of Erschel and Krilla Dryden Smothers and was born Nov. 21, 1916, near Montezuma. He was married to Bertha Sammon Jan. 21, 1938, in Oskaloosa.

Mr. Smothers formerly farmed in Poweshiek and Jasper counties. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, the Newton United Presbyterian Church and the Moose Lodge.

Surviving are seven sons, Jim of Montezuma, Garold "Bud" and Jack, both of Grinnell, Raymond of Colfax, William "Bill" of Marshalltown, and Fred and Ed, both of Newton; a twin sister, Louise Tindle of Montezuma; 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one sister, Wilma; and a grandson.

Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the American Lung Association.
