B. ESTHER SMOTHERS

B. Esther Smothers, 80, of Newton, a former resident of Poweshiek County, died Friday, Jan. 3, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Reese Chapel in Newton, with the Rev. George Salnave, pastor of the Montezuma Presbyterian Church, officiating. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma.

The daughter of Peter and Mary Roberts Sammon, she was born Dec. 14, 1911, in Albia. She attended Montezuma schools. She was married to Louis Smothers Jan. 20, 1938, in Oskaloosa.

Mrs. Smothers was a member of the Newton Presbyterian Church, Merriweds and the Neighborhood Women's Club.

Surviving are her husband; seven sons, James of Montezuma, Garold and Jack, both of Grinnell, Raymond of Colfax, William of Marshalltown and Fred and Ed, both of Newton; 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lodema McCormick of Malcom and Dorothy Flemming of Norwalk.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Evore and William Sammon; and one grandchild.
