WILLIAM BITCON SERVICES HELD

William Bitcon, 83, of 719 Seventh Ave., Grinnell, died Monday afternoon at Grinnell General Hospital after being hospitalized the past five days.

The son of James and Jennie Rutherford Bitcon, he was born May 28, 1889, at Audubon, Iowa. When he was three years old, his parents moved to a farm 1-1/2 miles west of Ewart, where he lived for 16 years. He was graduated from the Cleland school. In 1908, the family moved to Washington Township where he lived most of his life. He retired from the farm and moved to Grinnell in 1953.

On Dec. 11, 1911, he was married to Pearl Gregson. The couple had one son, James Raymond Bitcon, who now lives in Mason City. Mr. Bitcon was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers, one sister, and one niece.

On Nov. 6, 1955, he was married to Mrs. Icle Muckler in Moberly, Mo. The couple continued to make their home in Grinnell.

Mr. Bitcon was secretary of the Washington Township School Board for 27 years, township clerk for eight years, secretary and treasurer of the Oak Grove and Blue Point telephone company for 12 years and chairman of the A.S.C. farm program for six years. He was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and the men's club of the church.

He was a member of several fraternal organizations, including Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 273; Palestine Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons No. 143; Beulah Chapter No. 47, Order of the Eastern Star; Nazareth White Shrine No. 37, Newton; Elks Lodge No. 1266; and Knights of Pythias Lodge, of which he was a past commander and financial secretary at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Icle; his son, Raymond; one brother, Harry Bitcon of Grinnell; one stepson, Jack Muckler of Cedar Rapids; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Robert (Sue) Dimit of Grinnell; five step grandchildren; and four nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Bitcon were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. J. Eugene Young, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist was Mrs. Willard Heffner, and vocalists were Mrs. Mildred Paxson and Mrs. Margaret Taylor. Pallbearers were Mike Brooks, Don DeWitt, Clarence Earnhart, Don Hudnutt, Clarence Scobee and Jerry VanBrug. Honorary pallbearers were Lyman G. Case, Carl E. Child, Harvey Jensen, J.C. Parrott, John H. Peters, Henry Rohlfing, Noel B. Taylor, L.B. Watt, Earl H. Kennedy and Art McDowell. Flower bearers were Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Reams and Mrs. Edgar Stimson.

Masonic services were conducted by F.W. Tomasek and members of Hermon Masonic Lodge No. 273. Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Grinnell United Methodist Church.
