The Brooklyn Chronicle (Brooklyn, Iowa) April 6, 1900

Ely Renner was born in Ogle county Illinois, May 21, 1838, and died at his home six miles north of Brooklyn, March 28, 1900. He was married to Martha M. Nipe, Jan. 9, 1862. There were born to this union twelve children, nine of whom still survive. There were five sons and seven daughters. He resided in Illinois until the year 1871 when he came to Poweshiek county, Iowa, where he has since resided until the time of his death. He was in apparently good health on the very day of his death. He had made no complaints of feeling ill. He went to the barn about noon or a little before to care for the stock. He remained away long enough to excite the fear of his wife, but the rest of the family felt no anxiety. One of the sons went to the stable to turn out his horses and found the father lying on the floor behind the cows with life entirely extinct. A physician was called but all in vain. The funeral services were held in the Kent school house where a large concourse of friends had gathered to pay their last respects. Dr. Benson officiated taking for the text "Be ye also ready for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh." His theme was, "The surprise of Death." The remains were laid in the Kent cemetery. Mr. Renner was of a gentle and quiet disposition devoting himself entirely to the interests of his family and farm. He was a kind husband, an indulgent father, and a good neighbor. He was reared in the Restitution faith, and although not a member of the church adhered to that belief through life. His friends extend their sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family.
