IRA BRUCE, FORMER GRINNELL RESIDENT BURIED HERE THURS.

Funeral services for Ira Bruce, 78, former Grinnell area resident, were held in Des Moines Thursday. Burial was in Hazelwood cemetery here.

Mr. Bruce, a retired auto salesman, had been in ill health for the past 18 months. He was born in Putnam, Ill., but had made his home in Des Moines for the past 27 years.

Previously, he had been a resident of the Grinnell area for many years. He farmed for a number of years several miles southeast of here and later moved to Grinnell where he was employed as an auto salesman.

He was the son of Mary Ann Purcell and Franklin Bruce. His wife, the former Hilda Jones of Grinnell, preceded him in death, as did one son, Leonard.

He is survived by two sons, Lee and Ralph, both of Des Moines; six daughters, Mrs. Frank Polka, Mrs. Patrick Carey, Mable Greer, all of Des Moines, Mrs. Herbert Kline and Mrs. Elmer Bell, both of Colfax, and Mrs. Lloyd Tharp of Cedar Rapids.

Other survivors include four sisters, Mrs. Ellen Houvenagle and Mrs James McCoy, both of Des Moines, Mrs. Arthur Miller of Madison, Wisc., and Mrs. Mable Reese of Marshalltown; two brothers, Earl of Altoona, and Glenn of Swan; and 22 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
