UPHAM S. TREAT died at St. Paul, Minnesota, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Staples, on the 2nd instant, aged 75 years.

Mr. Treat came here many years since, and purchasing Allan's Island, then named, lying between Eastport and Lubec, now known as Treat's Island, engaged largely in the fishing business. He was the pioneer in the business of canning lobsters, and carried it on extensively for several years. He represented Eastport in the legislature one term.

A few years since he went to Japan, in the employ of that government, to instruct them in the art of canning fish, meats and other articles. At the expiration of the term agreed upon he returned to this country, stopping for a time with his children in California, and was on his was to Eastport, where he purposed to spend the remainder of his days, when he died.

Mr. Treat was an enterprising, public spirited, and thoroughly honorable man, and was greatly esteemed by a large circle of friends here. His hospitality at his island home was well known by his intimate friends. His remains arrived here on Thursday of last week, and services were held at the grave by Rev. T.W. Brown, of the Unitarian church.
