MISS STEWART RITES TODAY

Helen Treat Stewart, 81, of 1008 Spring St., Grinnell, died late Monday morning at Friendship Manor Nursing Home. She had been in failing health the past few weeks.

The daughter of William Alton and Ethel Mary Treat Stewart, she was born Jan. 17, 1892, in Grinnell. Miss Stewart was the last surviving member of her family. Among her ancestors were Governor Robert Treat of the Connecticut Colony (from 1683 to 1698) and Robert Treat Paine, one of the Massachusetts signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Miss Stewart was educated in the Grinnell schools and was later graduated from Grinnell College. She also attended college in Boston, Mass., and received her master's degree from the University of Illinois. She had served as librarian at the University of Illinois for a number of years before retiring and returning to her home in Grinnell in 1956.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1893; her mother Ethel, whom Miss Stewart cared for until her death at the age of 103; and her sister, Miss Mildred Stewart, who died Jan. 25, 1971.

Miss Stewart was a member of the Daughters of American Colonists, the New England Women, a 50-year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a 50-year member of Beulah Chapter No. 47 of the Order of Eastern Star.

Funeral services for Miss Stewart were held at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Ralph Beebe of the Mayflower Home officiating. Organist was Norman Goodbrod, and pallbearers were John F. Bierman, Guy Cooper, Dennis W. Lammert, Richard Ramsey, Robert G. Sheeder, and Bill Shuey. The Eastern Star memorial services were conducted by Mrs. Dorothy Adkins, worthy matron, and members of Beulah Chaper No. 47.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.
