Grinnell Herald (Grinnell, Iowa) Aug. 25, 1899

Died, at his home in Grinnell, August 23, 1899, John William Baker. He was born at Fort Edwards, N.Y., August 8, 1832, and was therefore 67 years and 15 days old.

He came to Grinnell in 1870. He was twice married. Before coming to Grinnell three children, two sons and a daughter, were born. All living. They visited him here in 1891.

In 1876 he was married to Miss Jennie S. Brown who survives him. He united with the Congregational church during the pastorate of W.W. Woodworth, between 1871 and 1876. His wife had previously united, in 1865.

Mr. Baker was in business with his cousin, Captain D.C. Baker, very recently deceased, and Forrest Treat, for many years--a prominent factor in the business life of the community. He discontinued his business in 1890, having before that time been attacked by a paralytic disorder which continued with increased severity till his earthly life closed.

Mr. Baker's character was a very strong one. Though not very demonstrative concerning his religious faith and experience, he yet cherished his views and clung to them with tenacity.

He united with the Baptist church, the church of his choice, at the age of 12 years. He sought an earlier connection but was advised to wait until he became older. His career as a business man was, so far as I am aware, without reproach.

He has been a great sufferer for about thirteen years. Only a person of the most resolute character would have attempted what he accomplished in being about his home and upon our streets until so recently, when the end came which he had long anticipated and for which he had prepared. He selected the hymns to be sung at his funeral, discussed the matter with calmness, and expressed his wishes about the event.

The funeral services were conducted at the house this morning at ten o'clock by the Rev. S.J. Buck, and his remains laid to rest in Hazelwood cemetery.
