MRS. VAUGHN RITES TODAY

Mary Etta Vaughn, 81, of 803 Center St., Grinnell, died Friday noon at Nelson Manor in Newton.

Funeral services for Mrs. Vaughn will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Russell K. Boersma, pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Organist will be Julia Pearce, and pallbearers will be Max Crawford, Max Hill, Howard Thompson, Clifford Thorp, Don Turner, and Lawrence Vitera. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Jeneral and Catherine Lyons Edwards, she was born July 19, 1895, at Monticello, Ky. She was married to Elijah Slagle. Following Mr. Slagles's death, she was married to Thomas E. Vaughn on Sept. 15, 1923, at Monticello. The couple had five children. Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn moved to Grinnell in 1929 where she was employed by Swift & Co. for 10 years and with Saga Foods at Grinnell College for five years. Mrs. Vaughn was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church here.

She is survived by her children, Mrs. Raymond (Darlene) Triplett, Thomas E. Vaughn, Mrs. Gerald (Kathleen) Cline, and Mrs. Mabel Allison, all of Grinnell, Joe L. Vaughn of Newton, and Mrs. Ada Belle Clouse of Veedersburg, Ind.; 30 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill Edwards of Janesville, Tenn.; and a sister, Mrs. R.E. (Maude) Hicks of Dayton, Ohio. She was preceded in death by both husbands; her parents; a daughter, Grace Slagle; two step-sons; one grandchild; two great-granchildren; five brothers; and two sisters.
