HERBERT A. BURCH DIES

Long and Useful Life Ended Last Saturday.

Herbert A. Burch passed away Saturday evening in Community Hospital following a long illness extending over many years. He was always in fairly good health, however, and his death was a great shock to all who knew him.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon in the Snyder Undertaking parlors, conducted by Rev. H.L. Wissler, of Chester.

The following tribute is by his cousin, L.H. Nutting, and expresses the feelings of all who knew the deceased:

Herbert A. Burch, the eldest child of Jas. G. Burch and Eliza J. Fitzsimmons was born near Davenport, Scott county, Iowa, December 18, 1856, and died at Grinnell March 24, 1923.

On January 19, 1881 he was united in marriage to Maggie Foster, daughter of the late Thomas Foster of Grinnell. To this union were born three children, one daughter, Amy Burch, died in 1900. The grief sticken wife and mother survive with two sons, Chester Burch, who resides on a farm near Grinnell and Arthur, a resdient of this city, two grand children, Irene and Ruth Burch. Other near relatives are three sisters, Mrs. Ben Foster, of Grinnell, Eva Burch of Chicago and Miss Hattie A. Burch of Davenport, two brothers, Edward W., of Davenport and Amory H., near Malcom, survive to mourn the loss of a fond and affectionate husband, a patient, indulgent father, a beloved grandfather and the dearest of brothers.

The greater part of his life was devoted to farming. He came to Poweshiek county in 1891, removed to Everly, O'Brien county in 1892; returned to this county again in 1895 and has been engaged in farming until about five years ago he embarked in the produce business known as the Burch Produce Co., and through honesty, integrity and close attention to business he had drawn about him a wide circle of friends who will with sincere sorrow share the grief of the family and relatives in the passing of a true and faithful friend and the kindliest of neighbors. The writer recognized in him much more than a friend, far more than a cousin, a life long "Pal" near and dear as any brother could be and his frequent visits to Grinnell will be sad and sorrowful since his bosom friend has gone away. Herbert was a faithful member of The M.W.A. lodge of Grinnell. The family and friends will have the sympathy of all who were so fortunate as to have made his acquaintance.
