HAZEL SLEBISKA

Hazel A. Slebiska, 90, of Grinnell died Monday, Nov. 30.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lon Lewis, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Organist was Margaret Wheeler, and vocalist was Wilma Schmitz.

Pallbearers were Keith Eschmeyer, Randall Johnson, Roger Johnson, Ronald Johnson, Mitchell Latham and Scott Latham. Honorary bearers were Richard Bronner, Carl Durbala, John Jessup, Phil Johnson, Jean Ray Roush and Jerry Slebiska.

Burial was in Hazelwood Cemetery.

The daughter of Henry Oscar and Annie Marie Petersen Johnson, she was born Nov. 10, 1902, in Kingfisher, Okla. She later moved to Hamilton County, Iowa, and attended school there.

She was married to Jerome B. Slebiska Jan. 6, 1925, in Indianola. They lived in Ellsworth, Eldora and Tama before moving to Grinnell in 1944. Mrs. Slebiska owned and operated the West Side Grocery and later worked for the Grinnell-Newburg School District.

She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, a past chief of the Pythian Temple No. 198 and past noble grand of Rebekah Lodge No. 67, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.

Surviving are her children, Gerry Slebiska of Grinnell, Jerome of Bay City, Mich., Darlene Roush of Taylor Ridge, Ill., Irma Latham of Grinnell and James of Des Moines; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and six brothers.
