Leading Poweshiek Attorney Dies at His Home in Malcom Last Sunday.

HAD PRACTICED AT MALCOM SINCE EIGHTEEN EIGHTY-FOUR

Was Long Recognized as Leading Poweshiek Legal Light and Influential Politician.

In the passing of Harry Ellsworth Boyd, which occurred last Sunday, Feb. 25, this county loses one of its pioneer attorneys and most active Republican workers, a man who made himself a friend to all, and who was popular with all classes.

Harry E. Boyd was born at Eddyville, Iowa, May 6, 1863. His death occurred Sunday, Feb. 25, 1923, at 2:30 o'clock in the morning, making his age 59 years, 9 months and 19 days.

Mr. Boyd's father, R.W. Boyd, was born in Pennsylvania in 1823 and came to Iowa and Eddyville in 1836 at the age of 13 years, a real pioneer of the state. He died at Eddyville in 1907 at a ripe old age after a residence of 81 years in the state. Harry's mother was Lucindia A. Boyd.

In his teens Harry attended Penn College, and then studied law in his father's office and passed his examination and was admitted to the bar in 1884. He at once came to Malcom and began the practice of his profession, and here he had lived neary 39 years, well and favorable known in this county and in the state.

August 6, 1884, Mr. Boyd was united in marriage at Eddyville with Aletha Baldwin. Three children were born to this union: R.W. Boyd, who became a partner of his father's, Vera Lucindia Boyd Eisele of Malcom and Arthur E. Boyd who died in 1912. Mrs. Boyd's death occurred Jan. 24, 1890.

March 25, 1891, he was united in marriage with Miss Carrie Cady who survives im. Besides his wife he leaves his two children, four grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Carrie Goodall, of Ogallala, Nebr., and his stepmother, Mrs. Margaret Boyd, of Jackson Summit, Pa.

Mr. Boyd has long been recognized as a lawyer of ability and of successful practice, and as a leading Republican worker in this county, district and state. He served two years as county attorney beginning in 1888, and was again elected in 1902 and served two terms. He was long a member of the county Republican central committee and served many years as chairman.

At his death he was a member of Lily Lodge No. 254, A.F. and A.M., of Malcom; also of the Malcom Chapter, and of the B.P.O.E. of Marshalltown.

The funeral is held this afternoon at his late home and burial is in the Malcom cemetery.

Mr. Boyd has been so long and so well known in this county, and has been foremost in so many activities that he will be missed for a long time in the court room, in business circles, and in almost every activity in which he has long been a leader. Genial, kind, and helpful he made friends everywhere, and leaves hosts to regret his passing away. The Senior of the Herald has long regarded him as a warm personal friend and joins with a large circle of other friends in expressing sympathy with the sorrowing family, and regret at his death.
