Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, April 27, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell for David U. Anthony, 96, of Brooklyn, who died at Friendship Manor in Grinnell on April 24, 2000. Pastor Ken Wallace of the Newburg-Chester Congregation and Virgil Scott of the Sheridan United Methodist Church officiated.

Organist Delores Weaver accompanied the congregation singing "The Old Rugged Cross," and a taped selection "Don't Cry For Me," was played. Pallbearers were Donald Anthony, Philip Anthony, Richard Clayton, David Lang, Larry Lang and Daniel Zhorne. Honorary bearers were Earl Heishman, Donald Parker, Robert Saunders and Claire Simmons. Flower bearers were Eleanor Ceaser, Warren and Mike Dee, Mary Lou Saunders and Vera Warnke. Interment was in the Sheridan Cemetery, rural Poweshiek County.

The son of Lincoln E. and Ada Jane VanDerVeer Anthony, David was born Sept. 15, 1903, in Sheridan Township, Poweshiek County. He was raised in the area and received his education at Sheridan #2 rural school.

He was married to Grace C. Mayo on March 15, 1925, a union of 70 years, at her parents' home in rural Poweshiek County. The couple farmed in Sheridan Township for over 50 years.

They moved to Tama in 1979 and to Grinnell in 1990. Most recently he made his home in Brooklyn, to be near his two daughters, and had been a resident of Friendship Manor since April 14.

David was a member of the Sheridan United Methodist Church for over 80 years, where he was a former board member and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, a 4-H leader, past president of the Sheridan Cemetery Association, and served on the Sheridan Board of Rural Independent Telephone Company. He was also a soil conservation commissioner for several years.

He was deeply devoted to his family and a man of prayer. He was a handyman who never saw a piece of machinery he coulnd't improve, and held a passion for woodworking. He loved his life on the farm and was a committed soil conservationist.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace, in 1995; three brothers, Emery, Leslie "Ted" and Ray Anthony; three sisters, Hazel Saunders, Laura Johnson and Myrtle Cloyd; one granddaughter, Susan Anthony; and one great-granddaughter, Debbie Flanagan.

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothea Lang and Helen Mayo, both of Brooklyn; two sons, Charles Anthony of Des Moines and Richard Anthony of Anamosa; and one sister, Mary Kenner of Chelsea. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
