MRS. GEORGE MAYO DIES WEDNESDAY; SERVICES FRIDAY

Mrs. Frances Mayo, 82, Grinnell, widow of George C. Mayo, died early Wednesday morning at a local hospital. She had been ill the last five years and seriously ill for about two weeks.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Sheridan Methodist church with the Rev. C.E. Kingsley and the Rev. Donald Woogie officiating. Burial will be in the Sheridan cemetery. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home.

The daughter of George and Jane Edwards Harbison, she was born Oct. 8th, 1878, near Geneseo, Ill. At the age of two, her family moved to Iowa and Poweshiek county, settling near the Chester community.

She attended the local rural schools and Grinnell high school. She was not able to complete her high school education and worked for several years as a housekeeper in several farm homes in the Chester community.

On Aug. 25th, 1902 she was united in marrige in Des Moines to George C. Mayo by the Rev. Kight. They moved to a farm in Sheridan township and this was their home for over 50 years. In 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Mayo built a home in Grinnell and retired from the farm. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1952.

Mr. Mayo preceded her in death on Apr. 16th, 1956.

They were the parents of four children: Mrs. David (Grace) Anthony of Tama, Frank Mayo of Ithaca, N.Y., Charles Mayo of Grinnell, and Mrs. Daryl (Alice) Eames of Grinnell.

Mrs. Mayo was a member of the Sheridan Methodist church and the W.S.C.S.

Survivors include her four children, 16 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Nellie White of Oskaloosa, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Anna Harbison of Grinnell.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
