GEORGE C. MAYO

George Clifford Mayo, son of Clifford N. and Mary Landes Mayo, was born December 15, 1869, at Grinnell, Iowa, and died here on April 16, 1956.

He attended the public schools of his day, and with the exception of a few years in Minneapolis, Minn., and Oskaloosa, Iowa, he spent his entire life in the Grinnell area.

He began farming the Chester community when he was 18 years of age, and in 1899 he purchased the farm in the Sheridan community where he lived and worked for nearly half a century. He was a member of the Methodist church at Sheridan.

On August 26, 1902, he was married to Frances Harbison, the service taking place in the home on the Mayo farm. To this union was born four children, all who survive him.

In 1948 he retired from the Mayo farm, and moved to Grinnell where he has lived until his death. He maintained interest in his home, the farm and family through his long life, although he was in poor health for the past few years.

He is survived by his companion, Mrs. Frances Mayo of the home in Grinnell, two daughters and two sons: Mrs. David (Grace) Anthony, Tama; Frank Mayo, Ithaca, N.Y.; Charles Mayo, Grinnell; and Mrs. Daryl (Alice) Eames, Gilman; 16 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Harry Cox, Denver, Colo.; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.

He was active in civic and church affairs as long as health permitted, serving as a teacher and Sunday school Supt.
