ROSE STOOPS' BROTHER SLAIN

The brother of a Grinnell woman was strangled to death by an intruder he surprised after returning late Friday to his California home.

William Edie, 85, of 47 Rockwood Court, San Francisco, the brother of Rose Stoops of Grinnell, returned home to find a burglar in the process of ransacking his house.

The alleged assailant, Willie Lee Bowles, reportedly has confessed to the slaying and remains in custody, according to Grinnell police who contacted San Francisco authorities on Rose Stoops' behalf.

Edie, a retired architect, lived alone in what Stoops described as "a nice neighborhood."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
