PROF. STOOPS DIES AT 100

John Dashiell Stoops, professor emeritus of philosophy at Grinnell College, died at his home here Sunday, Nov. 18, at the age of 100.

Known to generations of students as an outstanding teacher, Prof. Stoops joined the Grinnell faculty in 1904 and taught at Grinnell until his retirement in 1943.

The oldest living alumnus of Dickinson College (Carlisle, Pa.) at the time of his death, he received a B.A. degree there in 1894. He received an M.A. degree from Harvard in 1897 and his Ph.D. degree in philosophy from Boston University in 1899.

Prof. Stoops was one of the last surviving students of the American philosopher William James.

Author of three books and numerous articles on topics in philosophy, he was a past president of the western division of the American Philosophical Association. He received an honorary doctor of laws degree from Grinnell College in 1945.

Prof. Stoops was born Jan. 26, 1873, in New Castle, Del., during the presidency of U.S. Grant. His first wife, Mary Milner, preceded him in death. His second wife, Rose Edie, survives him, as do several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Prof. Stoops has willed his body to medical science. A memorial service is planned, the date to be announced. The Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
