IDA HEISHMAN, 89

Ida M. Heishman, 89, of Grinnell died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998 at the Montezuma Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 19 at Watts Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Smith of the First Presbyterian Church of Grinnell officiating.

Todd Kollbaum, soloist, and Alice Underwood, organist, sang and played, "The Old Rugged Cross," "Nearer My God to Thee" and "The Lord's Prayer."

Nathan Wanders, Steve Wanders, LaVern Rauch, Brandon Wanders, Jeff Heishman and LaVone Rauch were casket bearers.

Honorary casket bearers were Brian Heishman and James Heishman.

Interment was in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom.

Mrs. Heishman was born July 24, 1909, at home in Guernsey, the daughter of Lee and Esther (Sanders) Dougherty.

One of seven children, she grew up in the Guernsey area and attended country school. She learned at a young age to work hard, helping at home and also in neighbors' homes in times of birth and illness.

On Aug. 10, 1935, she married Forrest J. Heishman. To this union two sons were born.

They farmed before moving to Deep River. Mr. Heishman died in May 1962 and Mrs. Heishman moved soon after to Grinnell. There, she became head housekeeper at Grinnell College before retiring in 1974. However, she continued to clean homes for several families in Grinnell.

Mrs. Heishman's hobbies were gardening and keeping on hand garden food for the winter. She was a seamstress, sewing her own clothes and outfitting her children and grandchildren, as well as making quilts for them.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grinnell.

In March 1988, Mrs. Heishman became a resident of the Montezuma Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Forrest; a sister, Edna and three brothers, George, Perry and Clarence Dougherty.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Dale and Barbara Heishman of Montezuma and Dean and Beverly Heishman of Deep River; five grandchildren and their families, Lisa Wander of Barnes City, Brian Heishman of Yuma, Ariz., James Heishman of Spanaway, Wash., Jeff Heishman of Deep River and Whitney Heishman of North Chicago; six great-grandchildren, Nathan Wanders, Brandon Wanders, Taryn Heishman, Tiffany Heishman, Jessica Heishman and Heidi Heishman; two sisters, Ellen McClune of North English and Wilma Conley of Billings, Mont., several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
