GEORGE JAMES DOUGHERTY

The son of Lee and Esther Sanders Dougherty, George was born April 29, 1901 at Guernsey. He attended the Guernsey schools and was graduated fro Guernsey High School in 1919, the first class from the then new Guernsey High School.

George was married to Flora Effie Walton Feb. 19, 1925 at Marengo. During his business career he operated a dairy business in Montezuma; owned and operated grocery stores in Fairview and Central City; was in the produce business in Williamsburg; and during the late 1930s had operated the Victor Hotel. He retired in 1969 from the grocery store in Central City. He was a member of the BGM alumni club.

He is survived by his son and his wife Mr. and Mrs. George (Peg) Dougherty, of Belle Plaine; three sisters Mrs. Ellen McClune of North English, Mrs. Ida Heishman of Grinnell, and Mrs. Wilma Conley of Havre, Mont.; and many nieces and nephews.

George died June 29 at Friendship Manor in Grinnell at the age of 91. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1987; one daughter Mary Ann Spurrier in 1977; two brothers Perry and Clarence Dougherty; one sister Edna Dougherty; and his parents.

Funeral services were July 2 at McAninch-Fremming Funeral Home, Victor. Officiant was Rev. James F. Schutter, United Methodist Church, Victor.

Music was "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross" by organist Jean Fontinel. Interment was at Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
